Puca Pucara Tours

Puca Pucara, meaning "Red Fortress" in Quechua, is an Inca military and administrative complex located on a hill overlooking the road to the Sacred Valley from Cusco. Its reddish stone walls give the site its distinctive name and striking appearance against the highland landscape.

Strategic Outpost

This site is believed to have served as a military checkpoint and resting place for travelers and soldiers on the road between Cusco and the Antisuyo (jungle) region. Its elevated position provided excellent views of approaching traffic along the ancient Inca road network that connected the empire.

Puca Pucara is typically visited as part of a circuit that includes the nearby sites of Tambomachay, Q'enqo, and Sacsayhuaman. Together these four ruins make up the essential Cusco archaeological circuit outside the city center, all covered by the Cusco Tourist Ticket.
