The Short Inca Trail is a 2-day, 1-night trek that begins at KM 104 and follows the original Inca pathway to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. This is the perfect option for travelers who want to experience the magic of hiking the Inca Trail without the full 4-day commitment.

Why Choose the Short Inca Trail?

Not everyone has the time or physical conditioning for the classic 4-day Inca Trail, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the experience of walking ancient Inca pathways to Machu Picchu. The Short Inca Trail from KM 104 gives you the best of both worlds — a challenging and scenic day hike along the original trail, arriving through the iconic Sun Gate just like the classic trekkers.

This 2-day trek is ideal for travelers with limited time in Cusco, families with older children, or anyone who wants to combine trekking with the comfort of a hotel overnight in Aguas Calientes rather than camping.

What to Expect on Your Short Inca Trail Trek

On Day 1, you take the early morning train from Cusco to KM 104, where your Inca Trail adventure begins. The trail climbs through subtropical cloud forest to the magnificent ruins of Wiñay Wayna — one of the best-preserved Inca sites along the entire trail. From there, you follow the original stone pathway through lush forest and along dramatic cliff edges until you reach Intipunku (the Sun Gate), where Machu Picchu reveals itself in the valley below.

After descending to the citadel for your first views, you take the bus to Aguas Calientes for an overnight hotel stay. Day 2 brings an early morning return to Machu Picchu for a comprehensive guided tour of the temples, terraces, and sacred spaces of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Experience Highlights

  • Hike the original Inca Trail from KM 104 to the Sun Gate — the same final stretch as the classic 4-day trek.
  • Explore the stunning ruins of Wiñay Wayna, accessible only to Inca Trail hikers.
  • Arrive at Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate (Intipunku) — an experience no bus or train can replicate.
  • Enjoy a comfortable hotel overnight in Aguas Calientes with hot showers and restaurants.
  • Receive a full guided tour of Machu Picchu citadel on Day 2.
  • Perfect for travelers with limited time who still want the authentic Inca Trail experience.
  • Professional bilingual guide, all meals, and train tickets included.

Preparing for Your Short Inca Trail Trek

The Short Inca Trail is a wonderful way to experience the magic of the Inca Trail and arrive at Machu Picchu on foot — all in just 2 days. Here is everything you need to know to prepare.

Physical Preparation

The Short Inca Trail involves approximately 13 km of hiking with a 720m elevation gain over 6-7 hours. While significantly easier than the classic 4-5 day trek, it still requires a reasonable level of fitness. We recommend regular walking or hiking in the weeks leading up to your trip, with some uphill sections to prepare for the steady climb. Stair climbing is excellent preparation for the Inca stone steps you will encounter on the trail.

Acclimatization

The maximum altitude on the Short Inca Trail is 2,720m at the Sun Gate — actually lower than Cusco itself (3,400m). If you feel comfortable walking around Cusco after a day or two, you will have no problem on the trail. We recommend at least 1 full day in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before your trek to adjust to the altitude.

What to Expect

Day 1 is the active hiking day. You start at KM 104 (2,100m) after a scenic train ride and hike uphill through cloud forest to the Sun Gate. The trail is well-maintained with original Inca stone steps. You visit two major archaeological sites — Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna — and arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon. Day 2 is relaxed with a guided tour of Machu Picchu, then train and drive back to Cusco.

Train Options

This package includes the standard Expedition class train, which is comfortable with large windows. For a premium experience, you can upgrade to the Vistadome train with panoramic windows and glass ceilings for US$ 67 per person one way. We also offer a separate package with Vistadome included in both directions plus a 4-star hotel upgrade.

Best Time to Trek

The Short Inca Trail runs year-round except February when the entire Inca Trail is closed for maintenance. The dry season (May-September) offers the clearest skies, while the shoulder months (April, October) have fewer crowds with occasional rain. The wet season (November-March) brings lush green scenery and fewer tourists, but be prepared for rain — good rain gear is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Short Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail is rated as moderate difficulty. You hike approximately 13 km (8 miles) in one day with a total elevation gain of about 720m. The trail involves steady uphill sections with original Inca stone steps through cloud forest. No technical climbing is involved. If you can hike for 6-7 hours at a moderate pace with breaks, you can complete this trek. It is significantly easier than the classic 4 or 5-day Inca Trail — there is no Dead Woman's Pass (4,215m) to cross.
How far in advance should I book?
Like the classic Inca Trail, the Short Inca Trail requires a government permit that is limited and sells out during peak season. We recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance for dates between May and September, and at least 1-2 months for other periods. Your passport details are required at time of booking as permits are non-transferable once purchased.
What hotel do I stay in at Aguas Calientes?
We book comfortable 3-star hotels in Aguas Calientes with private rooms, hot water showers, Wi-Fi, and breakfast included. Hotel options include properties within walking distance of the bus station and town center. If you would like a specific hotel or an upgrade to a 4 or 5-star property, contact us and we can arrange it for an additional cost.
Do I get to visit Machu Picchu twice?
Yes! One of the great advantages of the Short Inca Trail is that you visit Machu Picchu on both days. On Day 1, you arrive through the Sun Gate in the afternoon and explore the citadel with fewer crowds. On Day 2, you return in the early morning for a comprehensive guided tour with fresh eyes and the best morning light. This gives you two very different experiences of this incredible site.
Is acclimatization needed for the Short Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail reaches a maximum altitude of only 2,720m at the Sun Gate — significantly lower than the classic trail's 4,215m at Dead Woman's Pass. Interestingly, Cusco itself is actually higher at 3,400m, so if you feel comfortable walking around Cusco, you will have no problem on the trail. We still recommend spending at least 1-2 days in Cusco before your trek to adjust to the thinner air.
What should I bring?
Travel light! You only need a daypack with water (2L), sunscreen, hat, rain jacket, snacks, camera, and personal items. No camping gear is needed — you stay in a hotel. Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip as the stone steps can be slippery when wet. Layers are recommended as temperatures vary from warm at KM 104 to cooler at the Sun Gate. See our Packing List tab for a complete checklist.
Can children do the Short Inca Trail?
Yes! The Short Inca Trail is suitable for children aged 8 and above who are reasonably active and enjoy hiking. The distance and elevation gain are manageable for fit kids. Children under 8 may find the full 6-7 hour hike challenging. There is no minimum age for the Inca Trail permit, but all trekkers need their own passport and valid permit.
What is the difference between Expedition and Vistadome trains?
The Expedition class train is comfortable with large windows and basic onboard service — included in this package. The Vistadome is Peru Rail's premium service with panoramic glass ceilings, wider seats, complimentary snacks and beverages, and onboard entertainment. You can upgrade to Vistadome for US$ 67 per person one way. We also offer a separate Short Inca Trail + Hotel & Vistadome package that includes the Vistadome in both directions plus a 4-star hotel.
What is the return train schedule?
Return trains depart Aguas Calientes in the early-to-mid afternoon (typically 2:55 PM or 3:20 PM on Expedition class). The journey to Ollantaytambo takes approximately 1.5-2 hours, followed by a 1.5-hour private drive to Cusco. You typically arrive back at your hotel by 7:00-8:00 PM. During rainy season (January-May), trains may terminate at Ollantaytambo instead of continuing to Poroy.
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking at altitude, medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and lost baggage. While the Short Inca Trail is lower altitude than the classic trek, the trail is remote and having coverage provides important peace of mind.
