Hike to the breathtaking turquoise waters of Lake Humantay, one of Peru’s most stunning glacial lakes. Nestled at 4,200 meters beneath the snow-capped Humantay peak, this full-day private tour from Cusco takes you through dramatic Andean scenery to a lake whose intense blue-green color comes from glacial minerals.

Why Choose This Tour?

Lake Humantay is one of the most photogenic destinations near Cusco. The turquoise glacial lake sits at the base of Apu Salkantay — one of the most sacred peaks in Andean cosmology at 6,271 meters — and the combination of turquoise water against snow-capped mountains creates an unforgettable landscape. The moderate hike through highland grasslands rewards you with a pristine alpine setting that feels completely removed from the tourist circuit. This is also the starting point of the famous Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

What to Expect

Your guide picks you up at approximately 4:00 AM for the drive west through the Andes. After a breakfast stop in the village of Mollepata, you continue to the Soraypampa trailhead at 3,900 meters. The hike to the lake covers 2.5 kilometers with 300 meters of elevation gain, taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace and acclimatization. At the lake, you have time to take in the views and photograph the turquoise water against the glacial backdrop. After descending, you return to Mollepata for a hot buffet lunch before the drive back to Cusco.

Preparing for Your Lake Humantay Tour

Lake Humantay is one of Peru’s most beautiful glacial lakes. Here is everything you need to know.

Altitude

The lake sits at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet). While lower than Rainbow Mountain, altitude sickness is still possible. We recommend at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before this tour. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol.

What to Wear

Temperatures at the lake can be near freezing, especially on cloudy days. Dress in warm layers: • Moisture-wicking base layer • Warm fleece or wool layer • Waterproof rain jacket • Warm hat and gloves • Hiking shoes with good grip

The Hike

The trail is approximately 2.5 km each way with 300 meters of elevation gain. The path is well-maintained, passing through Andean grasslands. Plan 1.5 hours for the ascent and 1 hour for the descent.

Physical Requirements

Moderate fitness required. The hike is not technically difficult but the altitude makes it challenging. Take it slow and listen to your body.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Lake Humantay hike?
Moderate. The trail is 2.5 km each way with 300 meters of elevation gain (3,900m to 4,200m). It takes about 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down. The altitude is the main challenge — we recommend at least 2 days acclimatization in Cusco before this tour.
Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes. The lake sits at 4,200 meters and the trailhead at 3,900 meters. We recommend at least 2 days in Cusco before this tour. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol the night before.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (April–October) offers the clearest skies and most vivid turquoise color. The lake is accessible year-round but the rainy season brings clouds that may obscure the glacier views. Morning visits generally have better light for photos.
Are entry tickets included?
Yes, entry tickets to Lake Humantay are included in the tour price.
Is there a horse option?
Yes. Horses are available at the trailhead (approximately 60–80 soles). They can carry you for most of the trail but not the final section to the lake shore. Horse rental is not included in the tour price.
What should I bring?
Warm layers, waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, sunscreen SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses, water bottle (minimum 1.5 liters), camera, and a small daypack. See the Packing List tab for full details.
Can children do this tour?
Children ages 8+ in good physical condition can do this hike with appropriate acclimatization. The trail is well-maintained but the altitude requires caution. Younger children should consider lower-altitude day tours instead.
How far in advance should I book?
Book at least 3 days in advance. During peak season (June–August), earlier booking is recommended.
