The Giant Hummingbird Birding Tour Cusco with Wonders of Peru Expeditions takes you on a six-day ornithological journey through the diverse ecosystems of the Cusco region. From the high-Andean grasslands above 4,000 meters to the lush cloud forests near Machu Picchu, this tour covers an extraordinary range of habitats—each home to unique bird species found nowhere else on Earth.
Peru ranks as the world’s second-richest country for bird diversity with over 1,800 species, and the Cusco region alone offers access to several distinct ecological zones. Led by a specialized English-speaking ornithologist, this tour targets marquee species including the Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas)—the world’s largest hummingbird—along with the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Sword-billed Hummingbird, and dozens of endemic Andean species.
This Cusco-based itinerary is designed for birders who want to maximize species diversity without long overland transfers. You visit four distinct birding zones—Sacsayhuamán highlands, Sacred Valley agricultural zones, Machu Picchu cloud forest, and the renowned Abra Málaga pass—all within a compact six-day framework. Our ornithologist guide maintains a daily species checklist and provides expert identification support throughout.

The Giant Hummingbird Birding Tour is a comfortable, hotel-based journey rated Easy to Moderate at 2.0 out of 5. While physical demands are low, the altitude (3,400–4,300m) requires awareness and preparation.
Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft) and the tour reaches 4,300m at Abra Málaga. Arrive in Cusco a day early if possible. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on your first evening, and take it easy during Day 1. Coca tea is widely available and helps with mild altitude symptoms.
Bring quality binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 recommended). A spotting scope is provided by the guide. For photography, a telephoto lens of 300mm or longer gives the best results. A lightweight tripod is useful at observation points.
Temperatures vary dramatically between the cold highlands (Abra Málaga can drop below freezing at dawn) and the warm cloud forest near Machu Picchu. Pack layers that you can add or remove quickly. A quality rain jacket is essential for cloud forest sessions. Neutral-colored clothing (greens, browns, grays) is best for minimizing disturbance to birds.
Travel and medical insurance is required for this tour. Carry any personal medications including altitude sickness medication if prescribed by your doctor. Sunscreen and insect repellent are important at all altitudes.
