The Lares Trek & Inca Trail is a 5-day, 4-night adventure that combines the cultural richness of the Lares Valley with the historic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Trek through remote Andean communities, meet traditional Quechua weavers, cross mountain passes with stunning views, then hike the original Inca pathway through the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu.

Why Choose the Lares Trek & Inca Trail?

While the classic Inca Trail focuses on archaeological sites, the Lares Trek offers something unique — an authentic cultural immersion into traditional Andean life. The remote communities in the Lares Valley have preserved their ancient customs, textile traditions, and way of life for centuries. Combined with the iconic Inca Trail finish to Machu Picchu, this trek delivers the best of Peru’s cultural heritage and natural beauty in one journey.

This route is an excellent alternative for travelers who want to experience both the cultural and historical sides of Peru. The Lares portion is less crowded than the classic Inca Trail and offers a more intimate connection with the Andean landscape and its people.

What to Expect on Your 5-Day Trek

Days 1-3 take you through the stunning Lares Valley, where you trek between traditional villages and across mountain passes reaching up to 4,450m (14,600ft). You will visit Quechua families known for their extraordinary hand-woven textiles, bathe in natural hot springs, and camp beneath snow-capped peaks of the Urubamba Range. Horses carry your main gear, so you trek with only a daypack.

Day 4 is the highlight — you join the Inca Trail at KM 104 for a day-long hike to the magnificent ruins of Wiñay Wayna and the iconic arrival through the Sun Gate (Intipunku) to Machu Picchu. Day 5 brings a full guided tour of the citadel and return journey to Cusco.

Preparing for Your Lares Trek & Inca Trail Adventure

This unique combination trek takes you through the remote Lares Valley before joining the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Proper preparation is essential for enjoying every moment of this incredible journey.

Physical Training

Begin your training at least a few weeks prior to your departure. Incorporate regular cardio exercises such as hiking, running, or swimming to build your endurance. Focus on strength training, especially for your legs, to handle the varying terrain. The Lares Trek reaches altitudes up to 4,450m (14,600ft), so altitude acclimatization is important.

Acclimatization in Cusco

Plan to spend at least two full days in Cusco before starting the trek. This will help your body adjust to the high altitude, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Take it easy during this time, explore the city at a relaxed pace, stay hydrated, and consider light walks to nearby ruins to acclimate properly.

Gear Essentials

Having the right gear is crucial for your comfort and safety. Be sure to review the packing list thoroughly to ensure you have everything you need. Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support are essential. Your passport must be valid for more than six months beyond your return date.

Health and Safety Precautions

Stay hydrated before and during the hike. Consult with your doctor about travel insurance and any vaccinations you might need. Drink plenty of coca tea to help with altitude adjustment. Pack a basic first aid kit, including personal medications and blister treatment.

Cultural Considerations

The Lares Valley is home to traditional Quechua communities. You will have opportunities to interact with local weavers and families. We recommend bringing small school supplies or gifts to share with the communities (please ask your guide for appropriate items). Photography is welcome but always ask permission first.

Packing Smart

Keep your pack organized by using packing cubes or dry bags to separate items. Horses carry your main gear on the Lares portion, but you should carry essentials in your daypack including water, snacks, rain gear, camera, and sunscreen. On the Inca Trail day, you will carry only your daypack.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cancellation policy?
Once the trip is confirmed, we can offer only a partial refund minus the cost of the Machu Picchu and Inca Trail permits and 1/2 of the guide's salary. Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable as they are government-issued with your passport details.
What if I get altitude sickness?
Our guides are trained in altitude sickness prevention and carry supplemental oxygen. We recommend spending at least 2 full days in Cusco before starting the trek to acclimatize. The Lares Valley reaches a maximum altitude of approximately 4,450m (14,600ft). If symptoms become severe, our guide will arrange an emergency evacuation.
Can I use my cell phone during the trek?
Cell phone signal is very limited to non-existent during the Lares Trek portion. You may get intermittent signal in some valleys. Once you reach Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, you will have Wi-Fi and cell service again. Bring a portable charger as there is no electricity on the trek.
How difficult is the Lares Trek & Inca Trail combo?
This is a moderate trek. The Lares portion involves crossing passes up to 4,450m (14,600ft) with well-maintained trails through valleys and communities. The Inca Trail section on Day 4 is a moderate 16km hike from KM 104 to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate. Good physical fitness and prior acclimatization in Cusco are recommended.
What is the maximum group size?
Our maximum group size is 8 travelers per guide to ensure a personalized experience. Private tours are available for smaller groups or families who prefer an exclusive trek.
What meals are provided?
We provide all meals during the trek: 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners. Our professional chef prepares fresh, nutritious meals at each campsite. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements — please let us know when booking.
Do I need to carry my own gear?
No. We provide horses to carry your equipment and personal items (up to 8 kg per person) on the Lares portion. You only need to carry a daypack with water, snacks, camera, and rain gear. On the Inca Trail day, porters are not available so you will carry your daypack only.
What is the best time of year for this trek?
The best time is during the dry season from April to October, with May to September being ideal. The rainy season runs from November to March. Note that the Inca Trail is closed every February for maintenance. We operate this trek year-round except February.
Is this trek suitable for children?
We recommend this trek for ages 12 and above due to the altitude and physical demands. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For families with younger children, we suggest our Sacred Valley day tours as an alternative.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Our guides are experienced in all weather conditions and the trek operates rain or shine. We provide 4-season tents and our chefs prepare hot meals and drinks to keep you comfortable. Rain gear is essential — pack a good waterproof jacket and pants.
