The Inca Trail 4 Days 3 Nights & Rainbow Mountain combines Peru’s two most iconic hikes into one unforgettable 5-day adventure. Trek the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, then hike to the dazzling Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,036m — perfectly timed after your Inca Trail acclimatization.

Why Choose This Combo?

Rainbow Mountain at 5,036m is one of the highest day hikes in the Cusco region. Most travelers struggle with the altitude when they first arrive. But after 4 days on the Inca Trail, your body is perfectly acclimatized — making this the ideal time to tackle Vinicunca. This combo gives you both of Peru’s bucket-list experiences in the most logical order.

What to Expect

Days 1-4 follow the classic Inca Trail from KM 82 — crossing Dead Woman’s Pass, exploring cloud forest ruins, and entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. After returning to Cusco, Day 5 is an early morning departure for Rainbow Mountain, where colorful mineral striped slopes and the Ausangate glacier create one of earth’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Experience Highlights

  • Complete classic 4-day Inca Trail trek from KM 82 to Machu Picchu.
  • Cross Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,215m and arrive through the Sun Gate.

Physical Preparation

This tour combines trekking with day tours, so fitness requirements vary by day. The Inca Trail portion requires good physical fitness with steep ascents and altitude above 4,000m. The Rainbow Mountain hike reaches 5,036m. Day tours in the Sacred Valley are moderate with some walking at ruins.

Recommended Training

Start a training program 8-12 weeks before departure. Focus on cardiovascular fitness with hiking, running, or cycling 3-4 times per week. Include hill climbs and stair work to prepare for the steep trail sections.

Acclimatization

We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco (3,400m) at least 2-3 days before your tour begins. The itinerary is designed to help you acclimatize gradually before the more demanding trek days. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol initially, and drink coca tea.

What to Bring

Pack for both trekking and day tours. You need broken-in hiking boots, warm layers for high altitude, rain gear, and comfortable clothes for city/valley days. Your porter carries your overnight gear on trek days. See the Packing List tab for details.

Health Considerations

Consult your doctor before traveling to high altitude. Consider altitude medication (Diamox) as a precaution. Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036m so proper acclimatization is essential. Our team carries supplemental oxygen and first-aid supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Rainbow Mountain after the Inca Trail and not before?
Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036m — higher than anything on the Inca Trail (max 4,215m). After 4 days of trekking, your body is well-acclimatized to altitude, making the Rainbow Mountain hike much easier and more enjoyable. If done before the trek, many people struggle with the altitude.
How difficult is Rainbow Mountain?
The hike itself is moderate — about 5 km one way on a gradual trail. The challenge is the extreme altitude (5,036m). However, after completing the Inca Trail, you'll be well-prepared. Horse rental is available for part of the trail if needed.
What if the weather is bad on Rainbow Mountain day?
Rainbow Mountain is best viewed on clear days. If weather is poor, the colorful stripes are less visible. We monitor weather closely and may adjust timing. The dry season (May-October) offers the best conditions.
Is the hotel included between the trek and Rainbow Mountain?
Yes. After the Inca Trail, you return to Cusco and stay at a hotel (included) before the Rainbow Mountain day hike the next morning.
What's the maximum group size?
Maximum 8 people on the Inca Trail. The Rainbow Mountain day tour may be shared with other travelers or can be arranged as a private tour upon request.
How far in advance should I book?
Inca Trail permits sell out months in advance. Book 4-6 months ahead for peak season (May-September). Rainbow Mountain does not require advance permits.
Are meals included on Rainbow Mountain day?
Yes, breakfast at Cusipata and lunch after the hike are included. Water and snacks are recommended to bring along for the hike.
Can I skip Rainbow Mountain if I'm too tired?
Yes, Rainbow Mountain is optional. If you prefer to rest after the Inca Trail, you can enjoy a free day in Cusco instead. However, most people find the post-trek acclimatization makes it very manageable.
What is included in the package?
Everything: full 4-day Inca Trail trek with all meals and camping, Rainbow Mountain day hike with transport and meals, one night hotel in Cusco, all permits and entrance fees, and all transport throughout.
Can I do Rainbow Mountain BEFORE the Inca Trail instead?
We don't recommend this as you won't be acclimatized for 5,036m. However, we can rearrange the order if you prefer, adding an extra acclimatization day in Cusco first. Contact us to discuss.
