For travelers who want the deepest possible Sacred Valley experience before reaching Machu Picchu, this 3-day tour dedicates two full days to exploring every major archaeological site in the valley, followed by a comprehensive guided day at the Lost City of the Incas.

Why Choose 2 Days in the Sacred Valley

Most tours rush through the Sacred Valley in a single day, forcing you to choose between sites or visit them superficially. Our 2-day Sacred Valley itinerary visits ALL the major sites — Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray, and Maras — with time to truly appreciate each one. The overnight in the valley also helps with altitude acclimatization as you descend from Cusco’s 3,400m to the valley’s 2,800m.

What to Expect

Day 1 explores the dramatic Pisac ruins and market, plus the imposing Ollantaytambo fortress. Day 2 visits Chinchero’s living weaving tradition, Moray’s ingenious circular terraces, and the ancient Maras salt mines before a scenic train journey to Aguas Calientes. Day 3 is devoted entirely to a comprehensive guided tour of Machu Picchu, connecting everything you’ve learned about Inca civilization to its greatest masterwork.

Tour Highlights

  • Pisac ruins — hilltop complex with Temple of the Sun and cliff tombs
  • Pisac market — colorful artisan goods and local specialties
  • Ollantaytambo — imposing fortress and living Inca town
  • Chinchero — traditional textile weaving with natural dyes
  • Moray circular terraces — Inca agricultural laboratory
  • Maras salt mines — 3,000+ pools in use since Inca times
  • Private guided tour of Machu Picchu

Tour Highlights

Acclimatization

Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft) above sea level. We strongly recommend arriving at least 1-2 days before your tour to adjust to the altitude. The Sacred Valley (2,800m) and Machu Picchu (2,430m) are both lower than Cusco, so you will likely feel progressively better as your tour continues. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol on arrival, and try coca tea — a traditional Andean remedy available throughout the region.

What to Expect

These are guided cultural tours traveling by private vehicle and train — no strenuous trekking required. You will walk moderate distances at archaeological sites (2-4 hours of walking on uneven stone paths and stairs at Machu Picchu, shorter walks at Sacred Valley sites). Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential. Each day involves some driving between sites with scenic stops along the way.

Health & Comfort

Apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently — UV radiation at altitude is intense even on cloudy days. Bring personal medications and consider altitude sickness remedies if sensitive. A light rain jacket is recommended year-round as mountain weather changes quickly. Stay hydrated with at least 1-2 liters of water daily. Hotels on multi-night tours have hot water and modern facilities.

Booking Tips

Book at least 2-3 months in advance, especially during peak season (June-September). Machu Picchu has daily visitor limits and popular circuits sell out quickly. Sacred Valley sites have more flexible scheduling. We coordinate all logistics, entry times, hotels, and trains upon booking.

Include/Exclude

  • Private Transportation to and from hotel in Cusco
  • Professional Bi-lingual Guide
  • Ticket / entrance tickets to the tourist centers (if you want to add to the cost of your tour we will be happy to do so)

Frequently Asked Questions

What time will I be picked up each day?
We contact you before your tour to confirm exact pickup times. Day 1 typically starts between 7:00-8:00 AM. On Machu Picchu day, pickup is earlier (around 4:00-6:00 AM) to maximize your time at the citadel.
Which Machu Picchu circuit will I visit?
We coordinate the best available circuit upon booking. Circuit 2 (the classic viewpoint route) is our top recommendation. Book 2-3 months ahead for the best circuit availability during peak season.
What hotels will I stay in?
We book comfortable 3-star hotels with private rooms, hot water, Wi-Fi, and breakfast. In Aguas Calientes, we use centrally-located properties. Hotel upgrades to 4-star or boutique options are available upon request.
Is the tour private or group?
All our tours are completely private. You'll have your own dedicated bilingual guide and private vehicle exclusively for your group. This means personalized pacing and flexibility throughout.
Do I need to be physically fit?
These are cultural touring days, not trekking. You will walk 2-4 hours on uneven stone paths at Machu Picchu and shorter distances at other sites. A moderate fitness level is helpful. We adjust the pace to your comfort.
What is the weather like?
Dry season (May-October) has sunny days and cool nights. Wet season (November-April) brings afternoon showers but fewer crowds and lush scenery. Rain is possible year-round, so always pack a rain jacket. Temperatures range 5-25°C depending on altitude and time of day.
Can I customize the itinerary?
Yes! While we have a recommended itinerary optimized for the best experience, we can adjust sites, timing, and activities to your preferences. Contact us to discuss customization options.
What meals are included?
Breakfast at hotels is included on overnight stays. Lunch and dinner are generally not included so you can choose from the wide range of restaurants your guide recommends. We can add meal packages upon request.
What if I get altitude sickness?
Cusco (3,400m) is where altitude is most felt. We recommend arriving 1-2 days early to acclimatize. The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are lower, so most people feel better as the tour progresses. Coca tea, hydration, and rest help. Our guides carry first aid supplies.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend 2-3 months ahead, especially for peak season (June-September). Machu Picchu has daily limits and popular circuits sell out fast. Earlier booking also ensures better hotel availability.
Why spend 2 days in the Sacred Valley instead of 1?
Two days allows you to visit ALL the major Sacred Valley sites without rushing — Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Moray, Maras, and Chinchero. A single day means skipping sites or rushing through them. The deeper immersion also helps with altitude acclimatization as the valley is lower than Cusco.
What's the difference between Day 1 and Day 2 in the Sacred Valley?
Day 1 focuses on the eastern valley — the dramatic Pisac ruins, vibrant Pisac market, and the imposing Ollantaytambo fortress. Day 2 covers the western valley — Chinchero's textile traditions, Moray's circular terraces, and the stunning Maras salt mines. Together they provide the most complete Sacred Valley experience available.
