Tour Highlights

Acclimatization

Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft) above sea level. We strongly recommend arriving at least 1-2 days before your tour to adjust to the altitude. Machu Picchu is at a lower 2,430m (7,970ft), so you will likely feel more comfortable there. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol on arrival, and try coca tea (mate de coca) — a traditional Andean remedy available throughout Cusco.

What to Expect

This is a train-based tour requiring no strenuous trekking. However, you will walk 2-4 hours on uneven stone paths and stairs at Machu Picchu, so comfortable shoes with good grip are essential. The train journey offers spectacular views of the Sacred Valley and Urubamba River — have your camera ready.

Health & Comfort

Apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently — UV radiation at altitude is very strong even on cloudy days. Bring personal medications and consider altitude sickness remedies if you are sensitive. A light rain jacket is recommended year-round as mountain weather changes quickly. Stay hydrated throughout the day with at least 1-2 liters of water.

Booking Tips

Book at least 2-3 months in advance, especially during peak season (June-September). Machu Picchu has strict daily visitor limits and popular circuits sell out quickly. We coordinate entry times and circuits upon booking to ensure the best available experience for your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time will I be picked up?
We will contact you 1 week before your tour to coordinate the exact pickup time and location. Tours typically depart between 4:00-7:00 AM from your Cusco hotel, depending on your train schedule and circuit entry time.
Which Machu Picchu circuit will I visit?
Machu Picchu offers several circuits (1-5) with different routes through the complex. We will confirm your circuit upon booking based on availability. Circuit 2 is the most popular as it includes the classic postcard viewpoint. We recommend booking 2-3 months in advance to secure your preferred circuit.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking at least 2-3 months ahead, especially during peak season (June-September). Machu Picchu has strict daily visitor limits set by Peru's Ministry of Culture. Popular circuits and morning entry slots sell out fastest.
What happens if my preferred circuit is sold out?
If your preferred circuit is unavailable, we will offer the best alternative circuit available. Peru's Ministry of Culture also reserves approximately 1,000 tickets daily for in-person purchase one day prior — we can assist with this process if needed.
Is this a private or group tour?
All our tours are private. You will have your own dedicated bilingual guide (English/Spanish) exclusively for your group. This means a personalized experience at your own pace, with no strangers in your party.
Do I need to be physically fit?
No strenuous trekking is required — this is a train-based tour. However, Machu Picchu involves 2-4 hours of walking on uneven stone paths, steps, and some steep sections. A moderate level of fitness is helpful. We can adjust the pace to your comfort level.
What is the weather like at Machu Picchu?
Machu Picchu has a subtropical climate. Dry season (May-October) has sunny days and cool nights. Wet season (November-April) has afternoon rain showers but fewer crowds and lush green scenery. Rain can occur any time of year, so always bring a rain jacket.
Can I visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
These require separate tickets with limited daily availability and must be booked well in advance. Let us know at the time of booking if you are interested and we will check availability. Both hikes add 2-3 hours to your visit and require good fitness.
What should I bring to Machu Picchu?
Essentials: passport (required for entry), comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, rain jacket, and camera. Selfie sticks, tripods, large backpacks (over 40L), and food are not permitted inside the complex. See our full packing list in the Packing List tab.
What if I get altitude sickness?
Cusco is at 3,400m where altitude sickness is common. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and shortness of breath. We recommend arriving 1-2 days early to acclimatize, staying hydrated, and drinking coca tea. Machu Picchu itself is at 2,430m — lower than Cusco — so most people feel better there. Our guides carry basic first aid and can assist if you feel unwell.
What train class is included?
The standard tour includes PeruRail Expedition class — a comfortable, modern train with panoramic windows, onboard snacks, and heating. You can upgrade to the Vistadome panoramic train for an additional cost. Ask us about upgrade options when booking.
Can I do this tour from Ollantaytambo instead of Cusco?
Yes! If you are staying in the Sacred Valley or Ollantaytambo, we can arrange pickup from there. The train ride from Ollantaytambo is shorter (about 1.5 hours vs 3.5 hours from Cusco), giving you more time at Machu Picchu.
