Experience the world-famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) and the stunning Red Valley on this private full-day trek from Cusco. At 5,100 meters, the Mountain of Seven Colors reveals vivid mineral-striped slopes — reds, yellows, greens, and purples created by millions of years of geological processes — with the snow-capped Ausangate glacier (6,384m) towering in the background.

Your private guide leads you on the 2-hour hike to the summit viewpoint, where you are rewarded with a panoramic view of Vinicunca’s iconic colorful stripes. On the descent, take the alternate route through the Red Valley — a crimson-hued landscape that many hikers consider even more spectacular than Rainbow Mountain itself. Along the trail, spot herds of alpaca grazing on the high-altitude grasslands and enjoy views of eagles and caracara falcons soaring above the Andean peaks.

The tour includes breakfast and lunch in the village of Cusipata, hotel pickup and drop-off, park entrance fees, and an oxygen bottle for altitude support. Our private tour ensures a personalized experience with your own guide and vehicle, allowing you to hike at your own pace away from large group tours.

Preparing for Your Rainbow Mountain Tour

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is one of Peru's most spectacular natural wonders, but the extreme altitude requires proper preparation. Here is everything you need to know before your trek.

Altitude — This is Serious

The Rainbow Mountain summit is at 5,100 meters (16,732 feet) — higher than Everest Base Camp. We STRONGLY recommend spending at least 2–3 full days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400m) before this tour. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, eat lightly, and avoid alcohol the night before. Our guide carries emergency oxygen and a first aid kit.

What to Wear

Temperatures at the summit can range from -10°C to 10°C (14°F to 50°F). The weather is cold and windy year-round. Dress in warm layers: • Thermal base layer (top and bottom) • Warm fleece or wool mid-layer • Down jacket or heavy insulated jacket • Waterproof rain jacket and pants • Warm hat, gloves, and scarf • Sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support and grip (not sneakers)

The Hike

The trail is approximately 3.5 km from the trailhead (4,600m) to the summit viewpoint (5,100m) — about 500 meters of elevation gain. The wide, well-marked path takes approximately 2 hours up. The first hour is a moderate uphill through grasslands where alpaca graze. The final 30–45 minutes is steeper and more challenging. The descent via the Red Valley takes about 1 hour along a different, equally spectacular route.

Red Valley

Our tour includes the Red Valley (Valle Rojo) as the descent route — a stunning crimson landscape that many hikers consider even more impressive than Rainbow Mountain itself. This alternate path means you see two incredible geological formations in one day, rather than simply retracing your steps.

Horse Option

Horses are available for rent at the trailhead (approximately 100 soles roundtrip). They can carry you for most of the trail but NOT the final steep section to the viewpoint, which must be completed on foot. Horses are a good option if you are concerned about fitness, but the final steep portion (about 600 meters) must be done on foot regardless.

Physical Requirements

This is a challenging day due to the extreme altitude. You need to be in good physical condition. The trail itself is wide and not technically difficult, but the altitude makes every step harder. Take it slow, use short breaks as needed, listen to your body, and do not push through severe altitude symptoms. Our guide monitors the group throughout.

Booking and Cancellation

Book at least 3 days in advance. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours and no-shows are non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance for all high-altitude treks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Rainbow Mountain hike?
Challenging due to the extreme altitude (5,100m / 16,732 ft). The trail is approximately 3.5 km each way with a steep final section. The ascent takes about 2 hours and the descent via Red Valley about 1 hour. You need to be in good physical condition and have at least 2–3 days acclimatization in Cusco. Horses are available for part of the trail if needed.
Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes — this is critical. We strongly recommend at least 2–3 full days in Cusco (3,400m) before attempting Rainbow Mountain. The summit is at 5,100 meters, one of the highest points tourists visit in Peru. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, eat lightly, and avoid alcohol the night before. Our guide carries emergency oxygen as a precaution.
What is the Red Valley?
The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is a stunning crimson-hued landscape on the descent route from Rainbow Mountain. Many hikers consider the Red Valley even more spectacular than Rainbow Mountain itself — deep red and orange mineral formations stretch across the terrain with far fewer visitors. Our tour includes the Red Valley as the alternate descent route, so you see both highlights in one day.
Is there a horse option?
Yes. Horses are available for rent at the trailhead (approximately 100 soles roundtrip). They can carry you for most of the trail but NOT the final steep section to the viewpoint, which must be done on foot. Horse rental is one-way only on the return via Red Valley. Horse rental is not included in the tour price.
When is the best time to visit Rainbow Mountain?
The dry season (April–November) offers the clearest skies and most vivid colors. June–August is peak season with the best weather but most visitors. The rainy season (December–March) brings clouds and possible snow that can obscure the views. We depart early to arrive before the crowds regardless of season.
Are park entrance fees included?
Yes, park entrance fees to Rainbow Mountain are included in the tour price. This is one of the advantages of booking with us — many budget operators charge entrance separately.
How is Rainbow Mountain different from Palcoyo?
Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is higher (5,100m vs 4,900m), requires a strenuous 2-hour uphill hike, and has more vivid colors plus the Red Valley descent. Palcoyo is much easier (30-minute flat walk), less crowded, and shows three separate rainbow mountains. Choose Rainbow Mountain for the iconic summit experience and Red Valley; choose Palcoyo for an easier, family-friendly alternative.
What should I bring?
Warm layers (down jacket, fleece), waterproof rain jacket, warm hat, gloves, scarf, sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, at least 2 liters of water, camera, and cash for horse rental if desired. Temperatures at the summit can range from -10°C to 10°C. See the Packing List tab for full details.
What time does the tour start and end?
Hotel pickup is at 4:00 AM. The drive to the trailhead takes approximately 3 hours including the breakfast stop in Cusipata. You return to your Cusco hotel between 5:00–5:30 PM. Total tour time is approximately 13–14 hours including all driving, hiking, and meals.
Can children do this tour?
We do not recommend this tour for children under 10 due to the extreme altitude and strenuous hiking. For families with young children, we recommend the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain tour instead — it is much easier and suitable for ages 5+.
How far in advance should I book?
Book at least 3 days in advance. During peak season (June–August), book as early as possible as Rainbow Mountain is one of the most popular day trips from Cusco and our private tours have limited availability.
