Ausangate 7 Lakes — Cusco’s Most Spectacular Day Hike

The Ausangate 7 Lakes trek is one of the most visually stunning day hikes in all of Peru. This full-day private excursion takes you through a high-altitude landscape of colorful mineral mountains, glacial valleys, and seven crystalline lagoons — each a different shade of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire. The route circles the base of Ausangate mountain (6,384m), Peru’s fifth-highest peak, through terrain that feels like another planet.

Unlike the popular Rainbow Mountain day trip, the 7 Lakes circuit sees far fewer visitors, offering a more authentic and peaceful Andean experience. The trail winds past herds of alpacas grazing on ichu grass, mineral-streaked hillsides in shades of red, orange, and yellow, and dramatic glacial formations that feed each of the seven lagoons.

Why Choose This Day Trip

The Ausangate 7 Lakes route is perfect for travelers who want a challenging and rewarding high-altitude hike without committing to a multi-day trek. The scenery rivals any in the Peruvian Andes — many trekkers consider this more beautiful than Rainbow Mountain. Your private guide shares knowledge of the local Quechua communities, geology, and wildlife throughout the day.

What Makes It Special

Each of the seven lagoons has a distinct character and color, created by different mineral compositions in the glacial runoff. The surrounding mountains display vivid layers of red, yellow, green, and purple sedimentary rock. At nearly 5,000m elevation, the landscape is raw, wild, and utterly breathtaking. Hot springs at the end of the circuit provide a perfect way to soak tired muscles after the hike.

Preparing for Your 7 Lakes Ausangate Tour

The Seven Lakes of Ausangate is one of Cusco’s hidden gems — stunning glacial lagoons in a remote high-altitude setting.

Altitude

The hike reaches approximately 4,600 meters (15,092 feet). While lower than Rainbow Mountain, altitude sickness is still a risk. We recommend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before this tour.

What to Wear

Temperatures can range from -5°C to 15°C. Dress in warm layers: • Moisture-wicking base layer • Warm fleece or down jacket • Waterproof rain jacket • Warm hat and gloves • Hiking shoes with good ankle support

The Hike

The circuit is approximately 8–10 km over varied terrain including grasslands, rocky paths, and lakeshores. Plan 4–5 hours for the full circuit including photo stops. The terrain is generally gentle with some moderate climbs.

Physical Requirements

Moderate fitness required. The distance is longer than most day hikes but the altitude gain is gradual. The main challenge is the altitude and the length of the trail.

Hot Springs

Natural hot springs near Pacchanta village are available after the hike (small entrance fee 5–10 soles). Bring a swimsuit! The warm mineral water is perfect for soothing tired muscles.

Booking and Cancellation

Book at least 3 days in advance. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Cancellations within 24 hours and no-shows are non-refundable.

Moderate to challenging. The circuit is approximately 8–10 km at altitudes between 4,200–4,600 meters. The terrain includes some rocky sections and gentle climbs. Good physical fitness and at least 2–3 days acclimatization in Cusco are recommended.
How many lakes will I actually see?
The circuit passes seven distinct glacial lagoons, each with a different color depending on the mineral content. The number visible depends on weather conditions and water levels, but most visitors see all seven on a clear day.
Is this more or less difficult than Rainbow Mountain?
The maximum altitude is lower (4,600m vs 5,200m), but the total hiking distance is longer (8–10 km vs 7 km). Overall, most hikers find the 7 Lakes tour moderately easier than Rainbow Mountain due to the lower altitude.
Can I visit the hot springs?

When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (April–October) offers the clearest views and most vivid lake colors. The lakes are accessible year-round but rain season may bring clouds and muddy trails.
Are entry tickets included?
Yes, entry tickets to the 7 Lakes area are included in the tour price.
What should I bring?
Warm layers, waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, sunscreen SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses, water bottle (minimum 2 liters), camera, and a swimsuit if you want to use the hot springs. See the Packing List tab for details.
How far in advance should I book?
