Discover Machu Picchu at a relaxed pace on our 2 Day Train Tour — the ideal choice for travelers who want to fully experience the Lost City of the Incas without feeling rushed. An overnight stay in Aguas Calientes means you arrive at Machu Picchu refreshed and ready for an unforgettable morning at the citadel.
While a 1-day tour is possible, spreading the experience over two days transforms the trip. Day 1 is devoted to the journey itself — the scenic train ride through the Sacred Valley and an evening exploring the charming town of Aguas Calientes. Day 2 is entirely for Machu Picchu, with an early start and no rush to catch an afternoon train. You’ll have time to truly absorb the wonder of this extraordinary place.
Travel in comfort aboard the PeruRail Expedition train, watching the Sacred Valley unfold outside your window. Settle into your Aguas Calientes hotel before your guide shows you the town’s markets, history, and best restaurants. The next morning, enter Machu Picchu for a comprehensive guided tour of the ancient citadel, followed by free time to explore at your own pace.

Cusco sits at 3,400m (11,150ft) above sea level. We strongly recommend arriving at least 1-2 days before your tour to adjust to the altitude. Machu Picchu is at a lower 2,430m (7,970ft), so you will likely feel more comfortable there. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol on arrival, and try coca tea (mate de coca) — a traditional Andean remedy available throughout Cusco.
This is a train-based tour requiring no strenuous trekking. However, you will walk 2-4 hours on uneven stone paths and stairs at Machu Picchu, so comfortable shoes with good grip are essential. The train journey offers spectacular views of the Sacred Valley and Urubamba River — have your camera ready.
Apply high-SPF sunscreen frequently — UV radiation at altitude is very strong even on cloudy days. Bring personal medications and consider altitude sickness remedies if you are sensitive. A light rain jacket is recommended year-round as mountain weather changes quickly. Stay hydrated throughout the day with at least 1-2 liters of water.
Book at least 2-3 months in advance, especially during peak season (June-September). Machu Picchu has strict daily visitor limits and popular circuits sell out quickly. We coordinate entry times and circuits upon booking to ensure the best available experience for your visit.
