Discover Palcoyo, Peru’s hidden alternative to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. This Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain full day tour takes you to a stunning viewpoint overlooking three separate rainbow-colored mountains, a unique stone forest, and panoramic views of the Ausangate glacier — all with an easy 30-45 minute walk instead of the strenuous 2-hour climb at Vinicunca.

Why Choose Palcoyo

Palcoyo receives roughly 100 visitors per day compared to Vinicunca’s 1,500+, making it a peaceful and authentic experience without the crowds. The colorful stripes are formed from 65-million-year-old mineral deposits — iron oxide (red), iron sulphide (yellow), and copper oxide (green) — exposed through tectonic uplift and glacial melting. The easier trail and lower visitor numbers make Palcoyo the better choice for families, older travelers, and anyone who wants the rainbow mountain experience without the extreme altitude challenge of Vinicunca.

What to Expect

Your private tour departs Cusco early morning and heads southeast through the Andean highlands. A breakfast stop in Cusipata fuels you for the day. You visit the colonial and Inca bridges at Checacupe before continuing to the Palcoyo trailhead at 4,900 meters. The gentle 30-45 minute walk leads to viewpoints overlooking three rainbow mountains, the stone forest, and the massive Ausangate glacier. After the hike, you return to Cusipata for a traditional lunch before heading back to Cusco.

Preparing for Your Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour

This full-day tour takes you to one of Peru’s most spectacular geological wonders. Here is everything you need to know.

Altitude

Palcoyo sits at 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) — 300 meters lower than Vinicunca. Despite the easier trail, altitude sickness is still a risk. We strongly recommend spending at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before this tour. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol the night before.

What to Wear

Temperatures at Palcoyo can range from -5°C to 15°C. Dress in warm layers: • Moisture-wicking base layer • Warm fleece or down jacket • Waterproof rain jacket • Warm hat, gloves, and scarf • Comfortable hiking shoes

The Drive

Palcoyo is approximately 3.5 hours from Cusco by private vehicle. The route passes through stunning Andean highland scenery. You will stop for breakfast and cultural visits to break up the drive.

Physical Requirements

The hike is 30–45 minutes of gentle walking on a maintained trail (about 2 km one way). No scrambling or steep climbs. This is one of the easiest high-altitude treks in Peru — suitable for all fitness levels, families, and older travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Palcoyo hike?
Easy to moderate. The walk is 30–45 minutes of gentle uphill on a well-maintained trail. Much easier than Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Suitable for families with children (ages 4+) and older travelers.
How is Palcoyo different from Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?
Palcoyo is 300 meters lower (4,900m vs 5,200m), requires only a 30-minute walk instead of a 2-hour climb, receives about 100 visitors per day versus 1,500+, and you see three rainbow mountains instead of one. It also includes the Stone Forest and Ausangate glacier views.
Do I need to acclimatize before this tour?
Yes. We recommend at least 2 days in Cusco before the tour. At 4,900 meters, altitude sickness is still possible. Drink coca tea, stay hydrated, and take it easy. An oxygen bottle is provided for emergencies.
When is the best time to visit Palcoyo?
The dry season (April–October) offers the clearest skies and best views. The rainy season (November–March) brings clouds but you may see the seasonal Red River, an additional natural feature.
Is breakfast and lunch included?
Yes, both breakfast and lunch in the village of Cusipata are included. Vegetarian options are available — please let us know your dietary preferences when booking.
What should I bring?
Warm layers, waterproof rain jacket, hat, gloves, sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, hiking shoes, water bottle (minimum 1.5 liters), camera, and cash in Peruvian soles for the entrance fee. See the Packing List tab for full details.
Can children do this tour?
Yes, children ages 4 and up are welcome with adult accompaniment. The easy trail makes Palcoyo one of the most family-friendly high-altitude experiences in Peru.
