The Inca Trail 2D/1N & Rainbow Mountain packs two of Peru’s bucket-list experiences into 3 action-packed days. Trek the Short Inca Trail from KM 104 through the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu, then hike to the spectacular Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,036m.

Why Choose This Combo?

If you have limited time in Cusco but want both the Inca Trail and Rainbow Mountain, this is your package. The Short Inca Trail gives you the authentic experience of hiking the original pathway through the Sun Gate, while Rainbow Mountain delivers Peru’s most surreal landscape. Doing them back-to-back also means you tackle Rainbow Mountain’s extreme altitude with better acclimatization from the previous day’s trek.

What to Expect

Day 1 is the Short Inca Trail: train to KM 104, hike through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, and arrive at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. Day 2 brings a full guided tour of Machu Picchu and train back to Cusco. Day 3 is an early morning departure to Rainbow Mountain for a high-altitude hike to one of the most colorful landscapes on earth.

Experience Highlights

  • Trek the Short Inca Trail from KM 104 through the Sun Gate to Machu Picchu.

Physical Preparation

This tour combines trekking with day tours, so fitness requirements vary by day. The Inca Trail portion requires good physical fitness with steep ascents and altitude above 4,000m. The Rainbow Mountain hike reaches 5,036m. Day tours in the Sacred Valley are moderate with some walking at ruins.

Recommended Training

Start a training program 8-12 weeks before departure. Focus on cardiovascular fitness with hiking, running, or cycling 3-4 times per week. Include hill climbs and stair work to prepare for the steep trail sections.

Acclimatization

We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco (3,400m) at least 2-3 days before your tour begins. The itinerary is designed to help you acclimatize gradually before the more demanding trek days. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol initially, and drink coca tea.

What to Bring

Pack for both trekking and day tours. You need broken-in hiking boots, warm layers for high altitude, rain gear, and comfortable clothes for city/valley days. Your porter carries your overnight gear on trek days. See the Packing List tab for details.

Health Considerations

Consult your doctor before traveling to high altitude. Consider altitude medication (Diamox) as a precaution. Rainbow Mountain reaches 5,036m so proper acclimatization is essential. Our team carries supplemental oxygen and first-aid supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this 3-day package work?
Day 1: Short Inca Trail from KM 104 to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate, overnight in Aguas Calientes. Day 2: Machu Picchu guided tour, train back to Cusco, overnight. Day 3: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) full day hike at 5,036m, return to Cusco.
Why do Rainbow Mountain last?
Rainbow Mountain is at 5,036m. After the Inca Trail and a day in Cusco, your body is better adjusted to altitude, making the high-altitude hike more comfortable. The order is specifically designed for optimal acclimatization.
How difficult is this package?
Moderate overall. The Short Inca Trail is a challenging day hike with consistent uphill. Machu Picchu day is easy. Rainbow Mountain's difficulty is mainly the altitude (5,036m) rather than the trail itself. If you're in reasonable fitness and acclimatized, it's manageable.
What hotels are included?
One night in Aguas Calientes (comfortable hotel) and one night in Cusco (3-star hotel). Upgrades available upon request.
Can I skip Rainbow Mountain?
Yes, it's optional. If you're too tired, enjoy a free day in Cusco instead.
What meals are included?
Lunch on the Inca Trail, breakfast at hotel in Aguas Calientes, and breakfast and lunch on Rainbow Mountain day. Dinners are at your own expense.
How far in advance should I book?
Book 3-6 months ahead for the Inca Trail permit. Rainbow Mountain doesn't require advance permits.
Is the horse rental at Rainbow Mountain worth it?
The horse takes you about 2/3 of the way. It's useful if you're tired from the previous days. At $25 it's an affordable option arranged on-site.
What's the weather like?
Best conditions May-October (dry season). Rainbow Mountain's colors are most vivid on clear, sunny days. We recommend booking during dry season for the best experience.
Can I do Rainbow Mountain BEFORE the Inca Trail?
Not recommended unless you've already been in Cusco for 3+ days. The altitude at 5,036m is very challenging without acclimatization.
