Frequently Asked Questions About Booking

Everything you need to know before reserving your Peru adventure.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail?
We recommend booking at least 4–6 months in advance, especially for the peak season (May through September). The Peruvian government limits Inca Trail permits to 500 per day (including guides and porters), so popular dates can sell out very quickly. If you have specific dates in mind, the earlier you book, the better your chances.
What is required to book? Do I need my passport?
Yes, we need a clear scan or photo of your passport to purchase Inca Trail permits. The name and passport number on the permit must match your physical passport exactly. For other tours that do not require government permits, we only need your full name and nationality to reserve your spot.
How much is the deposit and when is the balance due?
We require a deposit of $200 per person for Inca Trail treks and $100 per person for all other tours. The remaining balance can be paid upon your arrival in Cusco. We accept credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, and cash (USD or Peruvian Soles).
What happens if the Inca Trail is sold out for my dates?
If your preferred Inca Trail dates are unavailable, we will immediately suggest the closest available dates. Alternatively, the Salkantay Trek and Lares Trek are outstanding alternatives that offer equally stunning scenery and end with a visit to Machu Picchu. Our team will help you find the perfect option.
Can I change my dates after booking?
For non-Inca Trail tours, date changes are usually possible free of charge with at least 14 days’ notice, subject to availability. For the Inca Trail, date changes are much harder because permits are non-transferable. We will do our best to help, but changes may incur a fee if a new permit must be purchased.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 30+ days before departure receive a full refund minus a $50 processing fee. Cancellations 15–29 days out receive a 50% refund. Within 14 days of departure, deposits are non-refundable. Inca Trail permits are non-refundable once purchased, as this is government policy. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance.
Do I need travel insurance?
While not technically required, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and evacuation at high altitude. Trekking at elevations above 4,000 meters carries inherent risks, and medical evacuation from remote areas can be very expensive without insurance. We can suggest reputable providers upon request.
How fit do I need to be for the Inca Trail?
You do not need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is important. The Inca Trail involves 4 days of hiking at altitude (up to 4,215m at Dead Woman’s Pass), with some steep ascents and descents. We recommend regular cardio exercise (hiking, running, cycling) for at least 2–3 months before your trip. Arriving in Cusco 2–3 days early to acclimatize is also essential.
What about altitude sickness?
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. The best prevention is proper acclimatization: spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before trekking. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol for the first day or two, and consider coca tea, which locals have used for centuries. Our guides carry supplemental oxygen on every trek, and our itineraries are designed with gradual altitude gain.
Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?
Absolutely. Our camp chefs are experienced with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements. Just let us know when you book so we can plan accordingly. Peruvian cuisine offers wonderful plant-based ingredients like quinoa, potatoes, corn, and fresh vegetables that make for hearty, delicious trek meals.
What is included in the tour price?
Multi-day treks include: professional English-speaking guide, all permits and entrance fees, camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats), all meals during the trek, porters to carry communal gear, round-trip transportation from your Cusco hotel, first aid kit and emergency oxygen. Not included: sleeping bag rental ($25), walking poles ($15), tips for guides and porters, and travel insurance.
How do I get from Cusco to the trailhead?
All transportation is included in your tour price. We pick you up directly from your hotel or hostel in central Cusco early in the morning (around 4–5 AM, depending on the tour). The drive to the Inca Trail start point at Km 82 takes about 2 hours through the Sacred Valley. On the final day, train tickets from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo and a bus transfer to Cusco are also included.

Important Information

Please review these details before booking your tour.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. The name on your Inca Trail permit must match your passport exactly — no nicknames or abbreviations. Please double-check all details before submitting.

  • Valid passport required (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Clear passport scan needed for Inca Trail permit purchase
  • Name must match passport exactly (no nicknames)
  • Students under 25 with valid ISIC card receive discounted permit fees
  • Citizens of Andean Community countries (Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador) receive local permit rates

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip. Trekking at high altitude carries inherent risks, and insurance provides peace of mind for unexpected situations.

  • Coverage should include trip cancellation and interruption
  • Medical coverage must be valid for activities above 4,000 meters
  • Emergency helicopter evacuation coverage is highly recommended
  • Ensure your policy covers trekking and adventure activities
  • Popular providers: World Nomads, Allianz, SafetyWing, IMG Global

Inca Trail Permits 2026

The Peruvian government strictly limits Inca Trail access to protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only 500 permits are issued per day, including permits for guides, porters, and cooks. Here is what you need to know for 2026.

  • 2026 permits are already on sale — peak season (May–Sep) is filling fast
  • The trail closes every February for maintenance
  • Permits are non-transferable and tied to your passport number
  • Passport information required at time of booking
  • Lost or stolen permits cannot be replaced — carry a backup copy
  • Children under 12 receive free permits (passport still required)

Cancellation & Refund Policy

We understand plans change. Our cancellation policy is designed to be fair while accounting for the non-refundable costs we incur on your behalf (permits, transportation bookings, etc.).

  • 30+ days before departure: full refund minus $50 processing fee
  • 15–29 days before departure: 50% refund
  • 7–14 days before departure: 25% refund
  • Less than 7 days: non-refundable
  • Inca Trail permits are non-refundable once purchased (government policy)
  • Date changes subject to availability; may incur new permit costs
  • We recommend travel insurance to protect your investment
