The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most popular treks — and permits sell out fast. The Peruvian government limits the number of trekkers to 500 per day (including guides and porters), which means only around 200 tourist permits are available each day. During peak season (May through September), permits can sell out 3 to 6 months in advance.

How Inca Trail Permits Work

Inca Trail permits are issued by Peru’s Ministry of Culture and can only be purchased through a licensed tour operator — you cannot buy them independently. Each permit is tied to a specific date, passport number, and trekking route, and they are non-transferable. Once a date sells out, there is no waitlist.

When to Book Your Inca Trail Trek

For the best availability, we recommend booking your Inca Trail permit at least 4 to 6 months ahead for peak season (June, July, August). Shoulder months like April, May, September, and October still see strong demand. If your preferred dates are sold out, consider the Lares Trek, the Salkantay Trek, or our Inca Quarry Trail — all are excellent alternatives that don’t require the same limited permit.
