The Devils Balcony Horseback Ride Cusco with Wonders of Peru Expeditions takes you on a half-day ride through the hills above Cusco to the dramatic natural rock formation known as the Devil’s Balcony (Balcón del Diablo). Perched on a vertical cliff at 3,750 meters, this triangular window overlooking a deep gorge was once the site of an Inca temple dedicated to the rainbow.
The Devil’s Balcony is one of Cusco’s best-kept secrets — a natural rock bridge suspended over a chasm with the Chakan River flowing far below. The Incas built a temple here dedicated to K’uychi (the rainbow), and the site connects to the ancient Qhapaq Ñan road network that once linked Cusco to Huchuy Qosqo. No tourist ticket is required for this route, and you will encounter almost no other visitors along the way.
Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives to the ranch. After a safety briefing and horse assignment, you ride through farmland with panoramic views of Cusco, passing through the Temple of the Moon area before climbing to the Devil’s Balcony at 3,750 meters. You explore the natural cave and Inca shrine, then take a different return route past an ancient Inca quarry with caverns and a small temple. On flat sections of the return, riders comfortable at a faster pace can canter or gallop.
