Moray’s circular terraces descend approximately 150 meters into the earth, with a temperature difference of up to 15°C between the top and bottom — the Incas used this to simulate different altitudinal growing zones and experiment with crops. At the Salineras de Maras, you walk among thousands of salt pools cascading down the mountainside, still actively harvested by local families using ancestral techniques. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives approximately one hour to Moray at 3,450 meters. After a guided tour of the circular terraces, you continue to the Salineras de Maras for a walk through the salt pools and an explanation of the pre-Inca harvesting traditions.
