The Short Inca Trail + Hotel & Vistadome Train is our premium 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail experience. Trek the ancient pathway from KM 104 to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, stay in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, and return in style aboard the panoramic Vistadome train with complimentary drinks and live entertainment.

Why Choose the Short Inca Trail with Hotel & Vistadome?

This trek combines the thrill of hiking the original Inca Trail with premium comfort. Rather than camping, you stay in a handpicked hotel in Aguas Calientes with hot showers, comfortable beds, and easy access to restaurants and hot springs. The Vistadome return train features floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, a complimentary drink service, and traditional Andean music and dance performances — turning your journey home into part of the adventure.

This is the ideal choice for couples, families, or travelers who want the authentic Inca Trail hiking experience paired with a higher level of comfort and service. The trek itself is identical to the classic Short Inca Trail route — the upgrade is in the accommodation and return transport.

What to Expect on Your Trek

Day 1 begins with an early morning train to KM 104, where you step onto the original Inca Trail. The route climbs through cloud forest to the spectacular ruins of Wiñay Wayna, then follows ancient stone pathways to Intipunku (the Sun Gate) for your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu below. After descending to the citadel, take the bus to your hotel in Aguas Calientes for an evening of relaxation.

Day 2 offers an early return to Machu Picchu for a comprehensive guided tour, with free time to explore at your own pace. In the afternoon, board the Vistadome train for a scenic ride back through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transfer to Cusco.

Preparing for Your Premium Short Inca Trail Experience

This premium version of the Short Inca Trail combines the thrill of trekking to Machu Picchu with upgraded comfort at every step. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.

The Vistadome Experience

Your journey begins and ends aboard Peru Rail's Vistadome — a first-class panoramic train with glass ceilings and extra-wide windows. The 1.5-2 hour journey through the Sacred Valley and Urubamba River canyon is spectacular. Complimentary snacks, beverages, and on the return journey, a traditional Andean fashion show onboard. It's a significant upgrade over the standard Expedition class and transforms the travel portion into part of the experience.

Your 4-Star Hotel

After a day of trekking, nothing beats a hot shower and a comfortable bed. Your 4-star hotel in Aguas Calientes offers private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, heating, Wi-Fi, and a full buffet breakfast. Premium properties like El Mapi by Inkaterra or Tierra Viva provide modern amenities while maintaining the Andean character of the town. Upgrade options to 5-star properties are available on request.

Physical Preparation

The trek itself is the same as the standard Short Inca Trail: 13 km with a 720m elevation gain over 6-7 hours. Regular walking or hiking in the weeks before your trip is recommended. The stone steps can be challenging on the knees, so stair training helps. Trekking poles are included in this package and make a significant difference on the ascent and descent.

Acclimatization

The maximum altitude on this trek is 2,720m at the Sun Gate — lower than Cusco (3,400m). If you feel comfortable in Cusco, you'll be fine on the trail. We recommend at least 1 day in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before your trek.

Upgrade Options

Want even more luxury? Ask us about upgrading to a 5-star hotel (Sumaq, Inkaterra Pueblo) or replacing the return Vistadome with the ultra-premium Hiram Bingham luxury train — a 1920s Pullman-style experience with gourmet dining, live music, and champagne.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Vistadome train?
The Vistadome is Peru Rail's premium scenic train service. It features panoramic windows and a glass-paneled ceiling, giving you spectacular views of the Andes and the Urubamba River valley throughout the journey. The wider, more comfortable seats, complimentary snacks and beverages, and onboard entertainment (including a traditional Andean fashion show on the return journey) make it a significant upgrade over the standard Expedition class train. The journey is approximately 1.5-2 hours each way.
What hotel do I stay in?
This package includes a 4-star hotel in Aguas Calientes. We work with premium properties such as El Mapi by Inkaterra, Tierra Viva, or equivalent 4-star hotels. All offer private rooms with en-suite bathrooms, hot water, heating, Wi-Fi, and buffet breakfast. If you would like to upgrade to a 5-star property such as Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel or Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo, contact us for a custom quote.
How is this different from the standard Short Inca Trail?
The trek itself is identical — same route from KM 104 through Wiñay Wayna to the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu. The difference is in the comfort level: Vistadome panoramic train (both directions) instead of standard Expedition class, 4-star hotel instead of 3-star, trekking poles included rather than rented, and an overall premium experience. It's the same incredible trek with upgraded comfort at every touchpoint.
Is the Short Inca Trail suitable for beginners?
Yes! The Short Inca Trail is ideal for beginners and moderate hikers. At 13 km with a 720m elevation gain, it is significantly easier than the classic 4-5 day Inca Trail. There is no Dead Woman's Pass (4,215m) to cross. The maximum altitude is 2,720m at the Sun Gate — actually lower than Cusco itself. If you can walk for 6-7 hours at a steady pace with breaks, you can do this trek.
Do I visit Machu Picchu twice?
Yes! You visit Machu Picchu on both days. On Day 1, you arrive through the Sun Gate in the afternoon and explore the citadel with fewer crowds. On Day 2, you return for a guided tour in the morning with the best light for photos. This double visit is one of the biggest advantages of the Short Inca Trail over a standard Machu Picchu day trip.
Can I upgrade to the Hiram Bingham luxury train?
Yes! The Hiram Bingham is Belmond's ultra-premium 1920s Pullman-style luxury train featuring gourmet dining, live music, an observation car, and champagne service. It runs between Cusco/Poroy and Aguas Calientes. Contact us if you would like to upgrade the return journey to the Hiram Bingham for an additional cost. This is the ultimate luxury return from Machu Picchu.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Both the Inca Trail permit and Vistadome train reservations require advance booking. We recommend booking at least 2-3 months ahead for peak season (May-September). Permits are limited by the government and are non-refundable once purchased. Vistadome seats are also limited, especially during high season.
